I used to see responsibility as something heavy—a burden I wanted to avoid. It felt restrictive, like it took away my freedom. But then I paid closer attention to the word itself, and I discovered what appeared to me to be the exact opposite..

Responsibility: response-ability, or our ability to respond.

This is very different from the word “react,” which comes from “reactivating”—an automatic pattern from the past.

There’s a famous quote from Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning that many of you may know:
“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space lies our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Wow.

That space—the ability to respond rather than react—is where true freedom exists.
I discovered that by just taking on a level of responsibility, in every situation, I was able to open up so many new possibilities. I often share a very simple example with my clients to illustrate this.

Imagine you arrive late to work. You say, “I’m late because the traffic was bad.” No feedom in that. No power to change anything. You are at the effect of the world and all those other bloody commuters.

Now, imagine the same situation but with a different response: “I’m late because I didn’t anticipate the traffic.” Notice the difference? Now, you have agency. You have the power to make choices. You can check Google Maps for traffic updates, leave earlier next time, or resechdule the meeting.

Now take this simple idea and apply it more broadly: If you embrace responsibility in every situation, you will gain the power to choose how you interpret events. You won’t need to defend yourself or dwell on why things are the way they are. Instead, you will be able to refocus your energy on solutions and the next possible action.

Taking responsibility is deeply empowering. It means being the source of your own outcomes. It’s something you can apply to any situation to move things forward rather than finding yourself getting stuck in the past. And it’s far more fulfilling than playing the victim.

I no longer see responsibility as a burden. For me, it’s freedom—the freedom to act in any way I choose. Haha and I mean any way 😇

So go ahead, why not embrace a little more responsibility today!
